Thorne Moor 1974

Thorne Moor box was originally the block post between Thorne North and Thorne Colliery Boxes, though in its latter years it worked absolute block to Goole on both lines and absolute block to Stainforth Junction on the down line and track circuit block on the up. This box has a special place in my memory as it is the box in which I learned (unofficially) the art of block signalling. The centre window seems out of place.

A side view of the box. On the day this photo was taken a lorry had destroyed the up side gate. The target from the gate can be seen in the foreground.

The right hand end of the frame, showing the home and starter signals cleared for the passage of an down train. The down distant lever (with the reminder appliance) was the next in the sequence, i.e. home was no.13, starter was no. 12 and the down distant was no. 11. This odd sequence was not unusual in boxes of the North Eastern Region of BR.

Signalman John Stewart operates the gate wheel. The gate-gear from this box is still in use in New Bridge box on the NYMR.
